After months of restricted access, the legal team of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf finally secured a brief window behind prison walls to consult with their incarcerated leadership. According to Geo News, PTI lawyer Barrister Salman Safdar stated that Adiala jail authorities facilitated a 40-minute meeting with PTI founder Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, following repeated requests.

Geo News reported that the meeting took place at 4:30pm, with Safdar noting that he met the former prime minister after seven months and Bushra Bibi after 11 months. Although the duration was insufficient to thoroughly review all pending legal matters, both individuals briefed their counsel on their current health and living conditions while providing fresh instructions regarding specific cases, as per Geo News.

Background

According to Geo News, Imran Khan has been imprisoned at Adiala jail since August 2023, navigating multiple corruption and terrorism-related cases following his removal from power in April 2022. He is presently serving sentences in the Al-Qadir Trust and Toshakhana Bulgari jewellery set cases, while convictions in two other Toshakhana references remain suspended pending appeals. Geo News noted that he also faces legal proceedings tied to the May 9, 2023 riots, allegations which the party consistently rejects as politically motivated.

Political tensions surrounding his detention intensified in October when PTI initiated a long march toward Islamabad under the leadership of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, who Geo News reported is now dysfunctional due to emergency measures. The demonstrations, which began in Lakki Marwat on October 4, demanded the release of Imran Khan and medical access, including an evaluation by his personal doctor.

In response, Geo News stated that President Asif Ali Zardari proclaimed an emergency and imposed governor's rule in the province on October 11, acting on the advice of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The federal government pointed to security concerns and counterterrorism shortcomings as the basis for suspending the provincial administration, leading to the preventive custody of Afridi and several cabinet members, alongside reported arrests of provincial party figures like Junaid Akbar. Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry later confirmed that detained individuals facing charges would be tried, while others would be released, according to Geo News. Furthermore, Geo News reported that the Islamabad High Court directed jail authorities in September 2026 to end the isolation of Imran and Bushra and ensure compliance with prison rules.

Why it matters

For ordinary citizens and legal observers across Pakistan, the accessibility of political figures and the enforcement of prison rules remain central to discussions surrounding judicial processes and institutional transparency. The ability of legal representation to meet with detained leaders directly impacts the ongoing legal proceedings and the broader political climate, as highlighted by continuous appeals from party members and family for unhindered access.
