An ordinary ambulance visit turned into a devastating tragedy when an oxygen cylinder exploded, claiming seven lives in a matter of moments. According to Geo News, the victims included a pregnant woman, four hospital employees, and two attendants who were caught in the sudden blast and subsequent fire.

According to rescue officials cited by Geo News, the explosion occurred while staff were changing the ambulance's oxygen cylinder at a basic health unit (BHU) Plus facility in Tharparkar. Hospital administration stated that the expecting woman was still inside the parked ambulance, operated by the People's Primary Healthcare Initiative (PPHI), when the cylinder was being fitted.

Assistant Commissioner Nagarparkar Erum Karim Narejo stated, according to local reports carried by Geo News, that those injured in the incident were promptly shifted to Civil Hospital Mithi for medical treatment. District administration, rescue services, and health department teams were deployed to the scene, while the identification of the deceased remained underway.

Background

According to Geo News, the incident brought renewed attention to the broader challenges facing healthcare and emergency transport services in Tharparkar, a largely arid district where residents frequently rely on public health facilities. Geo News noted a previous, separate report from October 2019 highlighting difficulties in accessing ambulance services at Civil Hospital Mithi, where an ambulance had once been refused for transporting a deceased infant due to a lack of fuel funds.

Why it matters

For ordinary residents in remote and arid regions of Pakistan, public health facilities and emergency transport are vital lifelines. Incidents of this nature underscore the immense importance of stringent safety protocols during routine medical operations, as well as the ongoing need for reliable healthcare infrastructure in underserved areas.

According to Geo News, the official cause of the explosion has not yet been confirmed.
