Half a million young minds across Pakistan are set to receive digital tools under a newly launched national education initiative. According to Geo News, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif formally launched the PM Youth Chromebook Scheme during a ceremony in Islamabad to distribute 500,000 refurbished Chromebooks and internet devices.

During the event, the prime minister distributed laptops and internet devices to high-performing Grade 9 students and seminary students, Geo News reported. Speaking at the ceremony, PM Shehbaz described students as Pakistan's real asset, stating that the nation is embarking on a journey to empower young people and expand their access to modern education.

Background

According to Geo News, the prime minister noted that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz previously distributed 600,000 laptops over a 10-year period, whereas the new target aims to deliver 500,000 Chromebooks within two years. PM Shehbaz maintained that talent and hard work are not restricted by wealth or poverty, highlighting that at least 27 Danish schools are being built across the country to offer excellent facilities and free services.

Prior to the prime minister's address, Prime Minister's Youth Programme Chairman Rana Mashhood stated that the Tokyo Technology Care Foundation took practical steps to provide digital facilities to 500,000 Pakistani students, as reported by Geo News. Mashhood added that overseas Pakistanis have regained confidence in the incumbent government and wish to contribute to national development, while Danish schools have enabled deserving students to pursue education and advance opportunities.

Why it matters

The initiative addresses the growing need to equip students with knowledge and skills required to meet contemporary challenges. By providing digital access and internet devices to high-performing Grade 9 students and seminary students alike, the scheme attempts to bridge educational gaps and support deserving learners across the country.
