Five members of a single family, including a man, two women, and two young girls, were found dead inside a residence located in a private housing society in Karachi's Gulshan-e-Hadeed area, according to Geo News. Rescue officials and police responding to the tragic scene identified the deceased as 40-year-old Shahzaib, his 40-year-old wife Saba, their daughters Arya and Aizal aged four and five, and Shahzaib's 18-year-old sister Shumaila, as reported by Geo News.

According to details shared by Geo News, investigators suspect the incident to be a case of suicide. Police stated that Shahzaib had allegedly written a note before taking his own life, in which he cited financial difficulties and unemployment. The outlet reported that Shahzaib had previously been managing his family's expenses by selling property inherited from his late father.

Background

Geo News reported that Sindh Inspector General of Police Javed Alam Odho took notice of the tragic event and promptly sought a detailed report from the deputy inspector general (DIG). The provincial police chief directed officials to conduct a transparent and impartial investigation, ensure proper evidence collection from the scene, carry out necessary forensic investigations, and complete all legal formalities. Furthermore, Geo News noted that this incident occurred just weeks after a strikingly similar case in Karachi's Ahsanabad area within the Site neighbourhood, where five bodies including a man, his wife, and their three children were found in a flat under similar suspected circumstances involving unemployment and financial crisis.

Why it matters

Incidents of this nature highlight the severe socio-economic pressures and financial strains faced by ordinary households amidst rising economic challenges.
